In the wake of a sometimes disastrous debut Sunday for Daytona 500 group qualifying, NASCAR is tweaking the rules for the Xfinity and Camping World Truck series.

The field will be split into four groups for the first round, and the time of the session will be cut from five minutes to two minutes, 30 seconds. The fastest 24 cars will advance to the second round with those 12 fastest reaching the final session.

NASCAR Will Consider Changes to Daytona Qualifying Format

Reed Sorenson, driver of the #44 Golden Coral Chevrolet, and Clint Bowyer, driver of the #15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota, Bobby Labonte, driver of the #32 C&J Energy Services Ford, and JJ Yeley, driver of the #23 MAXIM Fantasy App/Dr. Pepper Toyota, are involved in an on track incident during qualifying for the 57th Annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 15, 2015 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Most of NASCAR's top Sprint Cup drivers were upset Sunday over the qualifying format for the Daytona 500, calling it "chaos" and an "embarrassment."

NASCAR vice president Steve O'Donnell called those comments and criticism "exciting feedback."

NASCAR switched to group qualifying at Daytona to assure just making the Daytona 500 was exciting. But after a crash in Sunday's first round, followed by a bombardment of criticism, O'Donnell said NASCAR would consider making changes to the format.

"We all share the same vision with the drivers. They want to put on the most exciting race possible," O'Donnell said. "We all knew that single car qualifying was a challenge for us. So there are a lot of different ideas out there.

NASCAR Alters Past Champion’s Provisional Rule

Past Sprint Cup champions can use a past champion’s provisional only once every six races this season instead of having unlimited access to provisionals as in the past.

Provisional starting spots are available to drivers who don’t make the field on speed under NASCAR’s new qualifying rules.
