Stewart-Haas Racing Names Regan Smith Interim Driver of No. 41

Stewart-Haas Racing has named Regan Smith interim driver of its No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend Feb. 26-March 1 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Smith will begin driving the No. 41 car during the open test session on Thursday. The race on Sunday will be Smith’s seventh Sprint Cup start at Atlanta. His most recent Sprint Cup start at the 1.54-mile oval was on Sept. 2, 2012 when he finished 14th.

Atlanta will be Smith’s second race in the No. 41 car. He drove the Haas Automation Chevrolet to a 16th-place finish last Sunday in the Daytona 500. Smith already had some history with Stewart-Haas Racing prior to Daytona. He subbed for Tony Stewart in the team’s No. 14 car last August at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Stewart-Haas Racing has named Regan Smith interim driver of its No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS for the 57th Daytona 500 Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.

Smith will be available in the deadline room of Daytona’s media center at 9:45 a.m. EST on Saturday. Final practice for the Daytona 500 takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:55 a.m.

Smith has some history with Stewart-Haas Racing, as he subbed for Tony Stewart in the team’s No. 14 car last August at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Goodyear Set for Tire Test at Daytona

Goodyear officials will conduct a two-day tire test at Daytona International Speedway April 16-17, with 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams tentatively scheduled to attend.

According to a release from track officials, Kasey Kahne and Regan Smith (Hendrick Motorsports), Danica Patrick (Stewart-Haas Racing), Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Roush Fenway Racing), Jamie McMurray (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing), Trevor Bayne (Wood Brothers Racing), Austin Dillon (Circle Sport) will participate in the test. Joe Gibbs Racing is also expected to attend, although no driver was named to represent the organization.

Menard, Smith Involved in Auto Accident

NASCAR drivers Regan Smith and Paul Menard, along with Smith's wife Megan and a friend of the Smiths, escaped injuries in a Colorado road accident on Wednesday. The foursome was on the way to a nearby ski slope. Smith lost control of his Silverado truck after hitting a patch of ice near his mountain home in Evergreen, outside of Denver. The truck slid off the road and crashed into a collection of trees. Smith and Menard will compete in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
