Joey Logano Edges Rival Kevin Harvick to Win Daytona 500

Joey Logano survived a green-white-checkered finish and suffocating pressure from his rivals to win one of the most intense and competitive Daytona 500s in recent memory.

Logano passed leader Jimmie Johnson with nine laps to go and thanks to a last-lap caution flag held on for the victory over Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson.

"I can't believe it. It was absolutely amazing," said Logano, who earned his ninth career victory in his 220th start. "This is awesome. The Daytona 500? Oh, my God. Are you kidding? I was so nervous the whole race."

Harvick, Logano Exchange Words After Sprint Unlimited

Saturday night, while racing just behind eventual winner Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano forced Harvick up the track and caused the No. 4 car to bounce off the wall. Harvick ended up with a flat tire and finished 11th while Logano finished sixth.

"You can't just drive somebody straight in the corner into the fence," Harvick said after bumping doors with Logano and engaging in a shouting match with the driver. "He kind of did the same thing to me at Talladega and I told him, 'The karma train is coming after you' and it bit him right in the ass. So you can't do that."

But Logano insisted he was "trying to help, really" and brushed off Harvick's remarks as typical of a driver known for engaging in confrontations.

Logano, Keselowski Lose Initial Appeals

Penske Racing on Wednesday lost its initial appeal of penalties against the Sprint Cup teams of reigning champion Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

The National Stock Car Racing panel unanimously upheld fines, point penalties and suspensions issued for unapproved rear housing parts discovered during inspection of both cars prior to the April 13 Texas race.

Team owner Roger Penske will utilize the final step in the appeal process, in which NASCAR chief appellate officer John Middlebrook will hear from both sides.

NASCAR Hammers Penske Racing With Suspensions, Penalties

NASCAR hammered Penske Racing with suspensions, fines and points penalties on Wednesday, four days after officials confiscated rear-end parts on the team's two cars before the NRA 500 in Texas.

Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano each were docked 25 points, while their crew chiefs, car chiefs, engineers and team manager all were suspended for six weeks. The crew chiefs also were fined $100,000 each.

The penalties, though severe, were expected after NASCAR said Saturday night that Penske's rear-end housings were "not in the spirit of the rules." NASCAR said in its penalty statment that there was a problem with the suspension mounts.

J.D. Gibbs: Logano Didn't Try to Hurt Hamlin

The president of Joe Gibbs Racing does not believe Joey Logano's motive was to keep Denny Hamlin from winning when the two wrecked on the last lap of Sunday's Sprint Cup race at California's Auto Club Speedway.

J.D. Gibbs also doesn't believe Logano knew Hamlin was injured -- as Logano has confirmed -- when he said his former JGR teammate got what he deserved in the wreck.

Hamlin crashed into a concrete retaining wall and suffered a compression fracture in his lower back that is expected to sideline him for at least the next five races, beginning with the April 7 event at Martinsville.

Joey Logano Gets New Spotter

When Sprint Cup teams roll into Charlotte Motor Speedway for the 2013 car test, Tab Boyd will debut in his new role as spotter for Joey Logano and the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford.

Boyd also will assume spotter duties for Sam Hornish Jr. on the Nationwide Series tour and work as a fabricator for Penske Racing during the week.

Boyd has worked as a spotter for the last decade, most recently with Danica Patrick.(FOXSports)
